How to Care for your Fuzzi Bunz:
Fuzzi Bunz must be washed after each use.
You'll have to store the dirty ones somewhere until you do laundry
and I absolutely love the hanging diaper pail because you can throw
it in the wash with the diapers. You'll want to empty the diapers
out of it first, of course, and wash it inside out to make sure it
gets clean.
When removing a dirty Fuzzi Bunz from your baby, simply shake or knock any solid waste from the Fuzzi Bunz
into the toilet. It really does come right off. If it doesn't, don't
worry about it. That's why you run the diapers through a rinse cycle
first. Pull the insert out of the diaper and throw both the diaper
and insert into the diaper pail along with your wipe if you're using
cloth wipes. Diapers, inserts and cloth wipes will be washed
together. Next, follow these steps for stink-free diapers:
- On wash day, run the dirty Fuzzi Bunz, inserts and wipes
through a cold rinse or pre wash.
- Wash your diapers in HOT water with a moderate amount of detergent (1/4 - 1/2 of the recommended dose).
Seriously, overdosing on detergent produces build up which is the most common cause of leaking and odor problems, not to mention being an irritant to your child's skin. Detergents that work well are 7th Generation, Ecover, Life-Kind, Cheer Free, All Free, Tide Free, and Oxiclean.
Really you can use anything that doesn't contain bleach, fabric softener, or
oils (most natural soaps do, unfortunately)
- Dry everything on Low or line dry the Fuzzi Bunz and dry the inserts and wipes on high.
Some things to avoid:
Don't wash natural fibers (such as cotton prefolds,
hemp inserts, or cotton cloth wipes) in the same load with your Fuzzi Bunz. The lint released from the cotton causes Fuzzi Bunz fleece to pill, resulting in a coarse feel.
You don't want coarse fleece next to that perfect baby bum.
Don't use diaper creams with Fuzzi Bunz, as they may stain or start leaking
due to the oil buildup. In theory, your baby shouldn't get a rash if
you're using cloth. If you must use diaper cream, I say use a
disposable (7th generation makes a good one without all the nasty
chemicals in mainstream brands). Or if you're a really dedicated
cd'ing family and refuse to use disposables (kudos to you!), put an
insert, cloth wipe, or diaper doubler between your baby and the
Fuzzi Bunz so the cream doesn't get on the fleece. Make sure you
wash whatever you used to protect the Fuzzi Bunz separately.
Don't use bleach, fabric softener, pure soap products, too much detergent, or excessive dryer heat.

Special Cleaning Situations:
If the Fuzzi Bunz are leaking or are really
smelly they need a little TLC. The most common cause for stinky
diapers is too much soap. I know, it seems like you should put in a
lot of soap to get them really clean but it doesn't work.
To test your Fuzzi Bunz for a repelling problem squirt a little water (use a
nasal aspirator or medicine dropper) onto a dry, clean Fuzzi Bunz. If the water beads on the surface of the fleece, you have a repelling problem.
See, I told you not to use diaper cream! Fuzzi Bunz diapers should not repel water.
To test your Fuzzi Bunz for a stinking
problem, take a whiff. If your eyes water and you say "wheeeweee!"
you've got a stinking problem.
Here's how to get your Fuzzi Bunz back into
tip-top shape:
- Get an excellent detergent, such as Allens Naturally, 7th Generation or Ecover.
- Run your Fuzzi Bunz and inserts through a hot wash/cold
rinse cycle without detergent. Use the large load setting so there's plenty of
room for the diapers to agitate in the washer. Look for soap suds in the rinse cycle. If you see
any, run another hot wash/cold rinse cycle again.
- Run a hot wash/cold rinse with about 1/4 the
recommended detergent
(for example, I use about 1/4 cup for 20 diapers) and use 1/4 cup of vinegar in the
rinse cycle.
- During the rinse cycle check to see if there are bubbles in the water. If so, run another hot wash/cold rinse cycle without detergent. If you have hard water, add Baking Soda or Calgon Water Softener to soften your water, which helps release leftover detergent.
- Line dry your Fuzzi Bunz or tumble dry on low heat.
After this process, you should have very clean, odorless diapers. In fact, your diapers should always be odorless after washing.
